PAST PROJECTS
BIRD BANDING
3D Scan + Print
Z3D scanned a variety of NZ bird legs for the bird banding program run by DOC. Once 3D scanned, the digital models were then 3D printed to scale in a tough plastic material then attached to soft toys to be used as training devices for bird banding volunteers to practice on before heading into the field.
“I knew Z3D was the answer, not only for high-detail 3D scanning but also for excellent photography.”
- Michelle Bradshaw (Banding officer - DOC)
MUSEUM EXHIBITion - 3D Scan
Human Dynamo Workshop & Z3D worked together for Te Taiao Nature at Te Papa. To give visitors a chance to touch giant moa remains, we built a tactile reproduction of an ancient moa pelvis with no fear of damaging the fossil itself. By 3D scanning we were able to capture all the surface detail necessary for the CNC router to work with when carving out the form of the fossil.
“Traditional moulding techniques could not be used to replicate a very rare and fragile fossilised Moa pelvic bone. Z3D used photogrammetry to capture it all for us.”
- Tony Drawbridge (Fabrication Manager - Human Dynamo Workshop)
CUSTOM Jewellery - 3D SCAN + print
Z3D scanned a flowering Protea and shrunk it down to fit onto custom digital ring then the file was printed in plastic to see if adjustments needed to be made. When happy with the final design the final piece was printed in high detail wax and cast in silver. Other 3D printing substrates include gold, platinum and bronze which are great options for unique, high-end 3D printed jewellery.
TEXTILE CONSERVATION - 3D SCAN
Te Papa acquired three gowns by artist Lindah Lepou which presented set of unique storage challenges. Using photogrammetry Z3D made a digital 3D model of a fibreglass body form and Te Mahi used CNC router carving to create Ethafoam body forms to act as hanging supports for the gowns.
“Cameron was excellent to work with. He is a good communicator as well as possessing huge technical expertise.”
- A. Peranteau (Textile Conservator - Te Papa)
GIANT MURAL - Fine art imaging
As part of the ‘Whole-in-the-wall O’Sushi Kiosk project (Human Dynamo Workshop), Z3D advised on and captured a mega resolution scan for a 12*4m mural. The original art work was done on three 730mm x 730mm panels and was captured as a 1000 mpx file. Printed on 48sqm of ACM, the final result can be found outside Moore Wilsons Porirua.
